Sunday School

Bro. Josh Smith – Superintendent of Sunday School

Reverend Terrence Howard, TH.M.- Minister of Christian Education

Some of you have asked these questions:

·       Sunday School, what’s in it for me?

·       Can Sunday School provide answers to everyday life situations?

·       Will going to Sunday School help me to instruct my children according to the Bible?

·       Can it help us in our home life?

·       Will it help provide for my family’s spiritual needs?

·       What can I get out of Sunday School that I can’t get out of regular worship services?

·       Does Sunday School provide me a better job?

·       Can I ask questions about the lesson being taught?

To answer questions such as these, I would have to say that Sunday School is not a cure all, but it will get you involved in the study of God’s word. You will be able to gather with other believers who care for one another, to discuss God’s word.

Just to be present in a class is to learn. It’s in Sunday School where you can discover the power of God’s word that has changed men, women, boys and girls’ lives for the better.

Sunday School’s purpose is:

·       To reach you and your family through the study of Bible-based International Lessons

·       To care for you and your family’s spiritual needs

·       To witness to you the love of Christ

Sunday School – There is a lot in it for you.   What the Sunday School is missing is YOU. See you Sunday morning.

Sunday School Classes are offered for all ages and are taught by GCBC’s SWAT Team (Servants With Anointed Teaching). Classes begin at 8AM.

 Sunday School Ministry Mission Statement:

 Scripture: Matthew 28: 19-20

Mission: Equipping students to live a Christ-Centered lifestyle, through the teaching and studying of God’s word.

Purpose: Developing personal relationships and encouraging spiritual maturity in Jesus Christ.

Goal: Teaching students to apply biblical truths and principles in their daily lives.

Originating in England, Sunday School is traced to the efforts of Robert Raikes (1735-1811), the editor of the Gloucester Journal. Raikes gained the popular and ecclesiastical support for the idea of Sunday School and in 1785 Sunday Schools were founded in Virginia. The early schools were primarily led by people of religious faith other than clergy using the Bible as the text. By the 1800’s, eighty percent of all new church members were introduced t the church through Sunday School. That is why it is so important that children as well as adults attend Sunday School.
